Joseys welcome people, animals fleeing storm

Three years ago, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, Josey Ranch played host to about 200 people, around 60 horses and an array of livestock, dogs, cats and even a rabbit. Sunday afternoon the population at the ranch located just east of Marshall on State Highway 43 was about 250 people, 189 horses, numerous dogs and cats — and a baby deer.
"And we know there's a lot more coming in," said Carla Garner, instructor and marketing specialist at the ranch. "We were up at 4 (Sunday) morning guiding campers in and we'll probably be up again at 2 or 3 (Monday) morning doing the same." There's no charge to those fleeing the hurricane's wrath, according to Ms. Garner.
"The Joseys just open up their home — this ranch — to help those who need a place to stay and to house their animals," she said.
Congratulations to R.E. and Martha
On August 16,2008 R.E. and Martha Josey were inducted into the Ark-La-Tex Sports Museum of Champions at the Shreveport Convention Center. They joined a list of 108 past inductees: former All-Pro wide receiver and kick returner Pat Studstill, former Louisiana Tech Lady Techster head basketball coach and basketball Hall of Famer Leon Barmore, and former Fair Park High School multi-sport standout Rogers Hampton.
